Al and Etta Jelly Bean Song

Al and Etta are two little bunnies who really want to help deliver Easter eggs. But first they need to be able to collect a basket full of jelly beans to show that they can be trusted to deliver Easter eggs.

Tune: Allouette

Al and Etta, they went out to get a
Basket full of jolly jelly beans.

Jolly jelly beans of [green]
Now you know just what I mean
Beans of [green]
Beans of [green]
Whoa!

Other verses

Red—That’s Exactly what  I said

Pink—That’s exactly what I think

Blue—one for me and one for you

Black—I keep them in a great big sack

White—I like to eat my beans at night

Yellow—that’s a helpful bunny fellow

Little Chick, Little Chick Hide and Seek Game

This is a fun interactive game that children love to play. It encourages vocabulary development and colour recognition.  Depending on the concepts you are trying to develop you can make the eggs using plain coloured felt as I have or introduce patterns. This felt set is easy to make. No sewing at all.

This is how we play.

First, talk about the eggs, highlighting colours, perhaps you could count them as well.

Then,in a sneaky way, hide the chick underneath one of the eggs. If children are younger you might need to let the chick poke out just a little in the beginning.

Then chant with the children:

Little Chick, Little Chick

Playing hide and seek.

Are you under the [colour ] egg?

Let’s take a peek.

Children take turns guessing which egg the chick is hiding under by identifying an egg by colour and removing it to search underneath for the chick.

For example:

Are you under the red egg?

If the child’s guess is incorrect replace egg and begin again.

Mary had a Coloured Lamb

Mary had a Coloured Lamb

This fun activity and song investigates colours, increases vocabulary and promotes an understanding of similes.

Mary’s lambs are so fluffy. They are made using polar fleece for the sheep’s wool and felt for the bodies. Each sheep is 11.5cm tall (4.5 inches) and 7.5cm wide (3.5 inches).

Mary has lost her lamb and needs our help.
We’ll have to sing to help her find the lost lamb.
Out comes the first lamb and we sing:

Yellow Lamb
Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb,
whose fleece was yellow as…… the sun!

Red Lamb

But, of course, that is not the lamb Mary is looking for. Out comes another lamb that we think may be the right one so we sing again:

Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb,
whose fleece was red as… an apple!

Continue singing for each different coloured lamb until we find the one whose fleece was white as snow.

White Lamb

Suggestions for the other lambs include:

 as black as night

as pink as fairy floss

 as orange  as carrots

as green as grass

 as blue as the sky

as brown as chocolate

as grey as a storm cloud

Ask the children to make suggestions for each colour.

Use as many or as few lambs at a time to suit the age and skill of the children playing

Apple Colour Sorting Felt Board Set

Apple Colour Sorting felt Board Magic

This set allows children to sort the apples by colour.

First,  discuss the colour of the apples—red, green and yellow.

Then label the basket either with a colour word card or with a coloured apple.

The children then pick the apples from the tree and sort them by matching them to the colour of the apple on the basket or by the colour word.

This set encourages colour identification, colour sorting and counting and
colour word recognition.

Five Grey Elephants Balancing Step by Step on a Piece of String

Five Grey Elephants

One grey elephant balancing
Step by step on a piece of string
He thought it was such a wonderful stunt
That he called for another elephant

Two grey elephants

Three grey elephants….

Four grey elephants….

Five grey elephants balancing
Step by step on a piece of string
All of sudden the piece of string broke
And down came all the elephant folk

Five Apples in a Basket

Five Apples in a Basket Felt Board Magic

The first apple in the basket was bright and shiny red.
The second apple in the basket said “My ,what a cosy bed”
The third apple in the basket said “Make room for me your pair”
The fourth apple in the basket said “Please, move over there”
The fifth apple in the basket said “Oh dear, oh me, oh my!”
This basket looks like pastry—I think we’re in a pie!”

I’ve added this felt set set to my collection of Apple Harvest themed felt boards where we sort apples by size and colour. We count apples and match numerals and number words. We retell the Dr Seuss classic 10 Apples Up on Top. We sing and we chant. We play and discover and along the way we learn.
