Incy Wincy Spider

Incy Wincy, Itsy Bitsy, Eensy Weensy.

However you sing this traditional nursery rhyme, it’s alway a favourite with young children.

Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed poor Incy out.
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain.
And Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the spout again.

What’s the Weather Felt Board Set

What's the Weather Felt Board Magic

I created a large felt set to use when talking about the weather. The pieces in this set are large – the sun is over 12cm across – the clouds are 17cm across.

Here is a song  about the weather to use with the felt set.

Tune: Oh My Darling Clementine

What’s the weather?
What’s the weather?
What’s the weather like today?
Is it windy?
Is it cloudy?
Is there rain?
Or is there sun ?

What’s the weather?
What’s the weather?
What’s the weather like today?
Is it stormy?
Is it snowing?
Is it hot?
Or is it cold?

What’s the weather?
What’s the weather?
What’s the weather like today?
Is there lightning?
Is i there thunder?
Is there snow?
Or a Rainbow?

Here are some closeups of the individual pieces

This is a great set for the Autumn/Fall Apple Harvest Season. With this felt set you can practice counting, numeral and number word recognition whilst harvesting apples from the apple tree.

Mary had a Coloured Lamb

Mary had a Coloured Lamb

This fun activity and song investigates colours, increases vocabulary and promotes an understanding of similes.

Mary’s lambs are so fluffy. They are made using polar fleece for the sheep’s wool and felt for the bodies. Each sheep is 11.5cm tall (4.5 inches) and 7.5cm wide (3.5 inches).

Mary has lost her lamb and needs our help.
We’ll have to sing to help her find the lost lamb.
Out comes the first lamb and we sing:

Yellow Lamb
Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb,
whose fleece was yellow as…… the sun!

Red Lamb

But, of course, that is not the lamb Mary is looking for. Out comes another lamb that we think may be the right one so we sing again:

Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb,
whose fleece was red as… an apple!

Continue singing for each different coloured lamb until we find the one whose fleece was white as snow.

White Lamb

Suggestions for the other lambs include:

 as black as night

as pink as fairy floss

 as orange  as carrots

as green as grass

 as blue as the sky

as brown as chocolate

as grey as a storm cloud

Ask the children to make suggestions for each colour.

Use as many or as few lambs at a time to suit the age and skill of the children playing

Mary had a Coloured Lamb

Inspired by Make Learning Fun and Mallory tells Stories and other blogs which I can’t find again. I ended up making my own patterns for this set.

Five Cheeky Monkeys Swinging in a Tree

Five Cheeky Monkeys Felt Board Magic

Five cheeky monkeys swinging in a tree
 Teasing Mister Crocodile:
“You can’t catch me, You can’t catch me.”
Along comes Mister Crocodile,
Quiet as can be, And SNAPPED that monkey
Right out of that tree!

This is a tried and true favourite song  set amongst the preschool group.

Five Cheeky Monkeys Five Cheeky Monkeys

I’ve made this felt set a few time now, in lots of different colours.

The crocodile has changed over time. This is the original design that I made three years ago. Now he has a second dark layer of spines/ spikes along the back.

Little Worm Hide and Seek Apple Sizes Felt Board Set

Apple sizes game

This felt set enables children to practice describing the apples by size using an interactive game that children love to play.

This is how we play.

First, put the three different apples on the felt board whilst discussing each apple’s size – you can use the words large, medium and small or big, middle sized and small or biggest, smallest, or largest – there are so many opportunities to expand vocabulary  in a meaningful and fun way.

Next, in a sneaky way hide the worm behind one of the apples. If children are younger you might need to let the worm poke out just a little in the beginning.

Apple sizes game

Then, chant together :

Little worm, little worm
playing hide and seek.
Are you under the large/medium/small apple.
Let’s take a peek.

Children then take turns guessing which sized apple the worm is hiding under by identifying an apple by size and removing it to search underneath for the worm.

If the child’s guess is incorrect replace apple and begin again.

Little worm Hide and Seek Apple sizes game.

The apple’s I’ve created are quite large the largest apple is 15cm by 16cm and the smallest is 7cm by 8cm so that it is easy to distinguish between the different sizes.

Although all of these apples in this felt set are red you could make a set with different coloured apples – so that choices could be made based on colours. This could easily lead to a discussion about the different kinds of apples that you can eat and how they taste different.

This is a wonderful set to use when you want to investigate farms, food, Autumn, harvest, colours and sizes.

Apple Colour Sorting Felt Board Set

Apple Colour Sorting felt Board Magic

This set allows children to sort the apples by colour.

First,  discuss the colour of the apples—red, green and yellow.

Then label the basket either with a colour word card or with a coloured apple.

The children then pick the apples from the tree and sort them by matching them to the colour of the apple on the basket or by the colour word.

This set encourages colour identification, colour sorting and counting and
colour word recognition.

Three Little Pigs

Three Little Pigs Folktale

I love folk tales – their simplicity makes them so easy for children to retell.

Today, I am sharing a work in progress – a felt version of the three little pigs.

First, let me introduce the three little pigs:

Three Pigs

and here is the big bad wolf, I’m not entirely happy with him yet:

Big Bad Wolf

I’ve made each of the little pigs houses so that as each house is blown down the the pig can run to the next house, open the door and move in.

Straw House

The straw house is big enough for one pig. But when the big bad wolf blows it down he can run to seek safety the house made from sticks.

Two Pigs in the Stick House

At last all three pigs are safe and sound in the brick house.Three Pigs Safe in the Brick House
